Our Leather Workshop

Founded in 2018, Liaotiyi emerged from a passion for traditional leatherworking and a desire to preserve the artisanal techniques that industrial manufacturing has largely abandoned. Our master craftspeople have trained across Europe, learning centuries-old methods that we've adapted for contemporary designs.

Each piece that leaves our workshop carries with it not just the natural beauty of premium leather, but hours of dedicated handwork. We source our materials exclusively from tanneries practicing vegetable tanning—an ancient, environmentally responsible process that uses plant extracts instead of chromium and other harsh chemicals.

The result is leather with unparalleled character that ages beautifully, developing a rich patina that tells the story of its use. This isn't just accessory-making; it's a commitment to creating heirlooms that improve with time and can be passed down through generations.

Materials & Care

Understanding your leather is the first step to a lifetime of enjoyment. Each material we use has unique properties and care requirements.

Selection of various leather types and textures

Vegetable-Tanned Leather

Our signature material, vegetable-tanned leather is created using natural tannins extracted from tree bark. This ancient process produces exceptionally durable leather that develops a beautiful patina over time.

Care Instructions:

  • Clean with a slightly damp cloth
  • Condition with natural beeswax every 3-6 months
  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure
  • Allow to air dry if wet; never use direct heat

Full-Grain Leather

The highest quality leather available, full-grain retains the entire grain layer, showcasing the natural markings and character of the hide. Extremely durable and breathable, it improves with age.

Care Instructions:

  • Dust regularly with a soft cloth
  • Apply leather conditioner twice yearly
  • Remove stains immediately with a specialized leather cleaner
  • Store in a breathable dust bag when not in use

Pull-Up Leather

Characterized by its color-shifting properties, pull-up leather is infused with oils and waxes that create lighter areas when the material is bent or stretched. This creates a dynamic, lived-in appearance from day one.

Care Instructions:

  • Wipe with a dry cloth to remove dust
  • Apply a small amount of leather oil annually
  • Embrace the changing appearance—scratches can be buffed out
  • Keep away from water and harsh chemicals

Our Crafting Process

Every piece from Liaotiyi undergoes a meticulous creation journey. We believe in transparency, showing you exactly how your leather goods come to life.

1

Material Selection

Each hide is carefully inspected for quality and character. We select the optimal sections for your specific piece, considering grain pattern, thickness, and natural features.

2

Pattern Cutting

Using traditional templates or custom designs, we precisely cut each component. This stage requires careful planning to maximize the hide's potential while ensuring each piece meets our exacting standards.

3

Edge Preparation

Edges are beveled, sanded, and burnished to create a smooth, refined finish that resists wear. This multi-step process transforms raw cuts into polished surfaces that will last for years.

4

Hand Stitching

We use the saddle stitch technique—a method far stronger than machine stitching. Each hole is punched individually, then stitched by hand with waxed thread, creating a bond that won't unravel even if a stitch breaks.

Finishing & Quality Control

Each piece is burnished, conditioned, and meticulously inspected. We test functionality, examine every stitch, and ensure the piece meets our standards before it's ready to become part of your life.
